My mother died of cirrhosis in 1969 due to a bad blood transfusion. It was difficult to watch her suffer the many hospital visits. Many of my memories involve her illness
I believe the study. I was 10? 1964. My Mom an RN, she brought home "used" IV Tubing often bloody to use in upholstery. She and my aunt sewed it into fabric as decorative cording on a chair. I look back and think my gosh, no infection control? Was it a lack of education in nursing school?
When I was a child, doctors reused needles + syringes right in front of us. Gave one child a vaccine. Stuck it right back in the multiuser vial and withdrew the next dose for next child. This actually contaminated the entire vial for whoever gets vaccination from that bottle.
Dental cleanings were also a factor. They did not sterilize utensils!
I can remember the humiliation of rectal temp checking at the Naval base hospital in Charleston, SC. They reused the same thermometers on all the kids, with proper precautions

That is how I caught Hepatitis..through a transfusion after my last baby was born, in 1977
