Last Thursday, June 11, health organizations around the world took to social media to celebrate Global Fatty Liver Day, a public education campaign that brings attention to the most common chronic liver condition worldwide. Led since its launch in 2018, by the Global Liver Institute (GLI), the campaign builds on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recognition last month of fatty, or steatotic, liver disease as a major public health issue.

GLI kicked off Global Fatty Liver Day on social media with a multilingual post that read:

“Today is Global #FattyLiverDay!

Join us and our partners around the world as we raise awareness about steatotic (fatty) #liverdisease, one of the most common #liver conditions worldwide.

This year’s message is simple: Act now. Screen early. Protect your liver.

Fatty liver diseases are caused by fat accumulation in the liver, or hepatis steatosis. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD, formerly called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD) and its more severe form, metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH, formerly called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH), are responsible for a growing proportion of advanced liver disease worldwide. Over time, the buildup of fat in the liver can lead to serious complications, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Around a third of people in the United States have MASLD, and about 5% have MASH. By 2030, GLI estimates 358 million people will be living with fatty liver disease worldwide. Fatty liver disease often occurs in people with obesity, type 2 diabetes and other metabolic conditions. With only two approved medications (Rezdiffra and Wegovy), management still largely depends on lifestyle changes such as weight loss and exercise.

“Act Now” is the theme of this year’s awareness day, which asks patients, healthcare providers, researchers and policymakers to improve prevention, early detection and healthcare access regarding fatty liver disease. Screening and educational events took place worldwide, including Liver Disease News:

“Most people with steatotic (fatty) liver disease don’t know they have it.

Steatotic (fatty) liver disease is now one of the most common chronic liver conditions worldwide, yet millions remain undiagnosed until serious liver damage has already occurred.

This Global Fatty Liver Day, we’re proud to partner with the Global Liver Institute and the Fatty Liver Foundation to help raise awareness about the importance of early detection, education, and access to care.

The European Liver Patient Association held liver screenings at two locations in Munster, Germany, leading up to the event, a part of the group’s European Liver Screening Tour.

“GLOBAL FATTY LIVER DAY

Today, the #EuropeanLiverScreeningTour by ELPA in Münster, bringing liver health directly to the people through screening activities at two locations across the city.

Your liver works silently every day to keep you healthy. Yet millions of people are living with fatty liver disease without knowing it.

#MASLD, #Obesity and type 2 #diabetes significantly increase the risk of #cardiovascular disease and livercancer.

But there is hope.

Early detection saves lives.
Prevention starts with awareness.
A simple screening can make a life-changing difference.

Today, we invite everyone in Münster to take a moment for their health.

Know your risk.
Get screened.
Protect your liver.
Protect your heart.

Protect your future.

Together, we are building a future where liver disease is detected earlier, treated better, and prevented whenever possible.”
